02FAQ
Questions, answered.
The things people ask most.
Is Wild OS really free?
Yes. No licence fee, no subscription, no premium tier. Wild OS is open source and will stay free. Windows mode uses your own Windows licence, which most PCs sold with Windows 11 Pro already have built in.
Do I need a Windows licence?
Only for Windows mode, the part that runs Windows programs. Wild OS itself needs none. If your PC came with Windows 11 Pro, Wild OS finds the licence stored in the computer and uses it automatically.
Does it work with Windows 11 Home?
Not yet. Our focus is a seamless workflow, with every Windows program as its own normal window, and the feature that makes that possible is only in Windows 11 Pro. You can upgrade Home to Pro through Microsoft. We're working on our own way to support Home and will share news when it's ready. Everything else in Wild OS works on any PC.
Will my Windows programs work?
Almost certainly. Windows mode is a genuine copy of Windows, so anything that runs on Windows runs there, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe apps. The exceptions are games with kernel-level anti-cheat and some hardware with Windows-only drivers.
Can I play games?
Yes. Steam's Linux version installs instead of the Windows one, and its built-in Proton runs most Windows games, with no Windows mode needed. The exceptions are a few games with kernel-level anti-cheat, like Valorant and Fortnite, which won't run.
Is this just KDE with a new theme?
No. Wild OS uses KDE's proven engine underneath, the window manager and the Qt toolkit, but every screen you touch has been redesigned from scratch: Start, the taskbar, Settings, the installer, first start, system dialogs and Windows mode.
What is Wild OS built on?
Debian, one of the oldest and most trusted Linux systems, with a deep layer of security hardening that changes many defaults ordinary Linux leaves open. KDE's proven engine runs underneath our own desktop design.
Can I keep Windows too?
Yes. The installer can put Wild OS alongside Windows, and you choose which to start each time. You can try Wild OS from the USB stick first without changing your disk at all.
Do you collect any data?
No. There's no account, no telemetry and no advertising. Wild OS sends no usage data or crash reports anywhere.
Does this website track me?
It counts visits, without cookies or trackers, on our own Matomo server at stats.wildos.io. It counts page views, the site you came from, your rough country, your browser type, and five actions: downloading Wild OS or its checksums, joining the launch list, following a link to GitHub and reaching the end of the tour. Your IP address is cut short before anything is kept, so it can’t point to you, and the detailed records are deleted after 180 days. If your browser asks sites not to track you, you aren’t counted at all. Nothing goes to Google or anyone else, and nothing in Wild OS itself reports anything.
When can I download it?
Wild OS is in active development. Leave your email and we'll send one message on the day it's ready. Nothing else, and your address is never shared.
